The Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) is an index of the 500 biggest companies in the United States by market capitalization trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ. Its largest components by weight are mega-cap stocks such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), Tesla (TSLA) and many more.

If you are a non-US resident who owns financial assets in the United States, you are not subject to the capital gains tax. You will, however, be charged at a rate of up to 30% for dividends. If there is a treaty between your home country and the US, then this tax rate could be reduced to 10% to 15%. You may also recover this tax as a credit in your country of residence.

Furthermore, the U.S. imposes a 40% estate tax rate on U.S. assets above a $60,000 exemption threshold on assets of the deceased nonresidents.

Here’s why you should invest in the Ireland domiciled ETFs over US domiciled ETFs:
✅ Lower dividend withholding tax (15%) instead of 30% from US ETFs
✅ No US-Estate Tax of up to 40% of the balance of US situated assets above USD 60,000
✅ Non-residents of Ireland are not liable to Irish gift tax or inheritance tax (deemed disposal rule)
✅ Availability of accumulating funds that reinvest dividends and which may help some investors reduce or avoid further taxes
✅ For Europeans it has become difficult to buy US domiciled funds due to 2018 European MiFID and PRIIPs regulations
