Tesla Inc.’s shares plummeted after as they announced a disappointing deliveries report caused by shipment issues that increased the number of vehicles on their way to customers as the quarter ended. The maker of Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers handed over 343,830 vehicles to customers in the last three months, short of the almost 358,000 total that analysts expected.
Short bets against Credit Suisse Group AG have quadrupled in a month, a further sign of fragile investor confidence ahead of this month’s announcement of a major strategic review. The rising short interest will add to investor jitters after the stock plunged to a record low at the start of the week before rebounding. Credit Suisse has lost more than half its value this year, yet short selling pressure had eased significantly over the summer prior to the latest market turmoil, with the cost to insure the bank’s debt against default spiking to an all-time high.
The US labor market stayed strong in September as the unemployment rate unexpectedly returned to an historic low of 3.5%, leaving the inflation-phobic Federal Reserve on course to deliver yet another aggressive interest-rate hike. Average hourly earnings rose firmly at 0.3% m-o-m or 5% y-o-y, signalling the raging inflation is no where near ending.
The spread between the yields on the 10-year and 2-year Treasury notes has been inverted for more than a month, and is now standing at -0.42%. An inverted yield curve has historically been a reliable indicator of a coming recession, coming most recently before downturns in 1990, 2001, and 2008. While brief inversions typically don’t predict a downturn, ones that last beyond a momentary flashing can have stronger predictive power.
