Job growth accelerated at a much faster pace than expected in June, with unemployment rate remaining at 3.6% and nonfarm payrolls increased 372,000 in the month, indicating that the main pillar of the U.S. economy remains strong despite pockets of weakness. However, the high wage number means Federal Reserve officials are even more likely to press ahead with aggressive rate hikes over the coming months.

Oil prices have fallen to four-month lows. Copper has slumped 30% from recent highs, while wheat has fallen 40%. The prices of key raw materials from oil to oats have tumbled in recent weeks, taking the S&P GSCI commodities index back to where it stood before Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. However, the drop is a double-edged sword: traders and investors are ditching commodities because they think economic growth is going to slow dramatically, or even start going backwards.

China’s Covid Zero strategy is being tested anew after a jump in infections across Shanghai raised the specter of another lockdown, while a highly infectious subvariant started spreading in the country for the first time.
