The S&P 500 is widely regarded as the best single gauge of large-cap U.S. equities. According to Standard & Poor’s (S&P)’s survey, an estimated USD 13.5 trillion is indexed or benchmarked to the index, with indexed assets comprising approximately USD 5.4 trillion of this total (as of Dec. 31, 2020). The index includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 80% of available market capitalization.
The S&P 500 is often considered the primary benchmark for U.S. equities, and many mutual funds and ETFs are available that track the index. Because of its influence, it is important to understand how this index is constructed and what exactly it measures in the market.
The S&P 500 index is a free float-adjusted market-cap weighted index, and because of that, the index is continuously recalculated based on the number of shares available for trading. Because it is constructed by market cap, the larger a company is, the greater weight it will represent in the S&P.
