“Bear market” is a term used by investors to describe a steep and sustained market downturn. Technically, it’s a drop of 20% or more from recent highs. Investors commonly apply this phrase to describe a broad stock index like the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite Index or the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), but it also works for individual stocks.
Bear markets are a regular feature of the stock market. Since World War II, there have been nine declines of 20% to 40% in the S&P 500, and three others over 40%, according to Guggenheim Investments (not inclusive of 2022). On average, stocks took 14 months and 58 months to recover, respectively, after those declines.
According to NBER data, from 1945 to 2009, the average recession lasted 11 months. This is an improvement over earlier eras: From 1854 to 1919, the average recession lasted 21.6 months. Over the past 30 years, the U.S. has gone through four recessions: The Covid-19 Recession (2020), The Great Recession (Dec’07 to Jun’09), the Dot Com Recession (Mar’01 to Nov’01) and the Gulf War Recession (Jul’90 to Mar’91).
However, another “worst case” scenario could be waiting for us – the Lost Decade, which is commonly used to describe the decade of the 1990s in Japan, a period of economic stagnation which became one of the longest-running economic crises in recorded history.
With the 40-year high inflation in place coupled with a hawkish Federal Reserve, on top of the rising gas and oil price, food crisis, supply chain issue, and the upcoming U.S. mid-term election, will the US/world economy enter into a Lost Decade?
