Is Buying Stocks Halal?
The good news first: buying stocks and investing? Absolutely halal!🎉
There are so many choices of stocks out there, some offer Shariah compliant, some do not, It’s up to you whether to filter out the non-halal stocks! Here are some must knows if you want to choose businesses that comply with the principles of Islamic finance.
What makes the company halal 🕌?
1. The Business
What does the company do to earn its revenue? If it’s involved in haram activities, like sale of alcohol, pork products, pornography, gambling, military equipment or weapons, it’s a straight-up no 🙅♀️.
2. The Financials
A company’s financial statements must also be halal. This means not having too much debt, and not holding significant interest-based assets.
3. The Transactions
All the company’s transactions should be transparent, certain and free from deceit (Gharar).
4. Integrity and Honesty
Islamic business ethics place a strong emphasis on integrity, honesty, and fairness in all dealings. 🥷Deception, fraud, and misrepresentation are strictly prohibited.
Other characteristics of a Shariah-compliant fund include
- an appointed Shariah board
- an annual Shariah audit
- purifying certain prohibited types of income, such as interest, by donating them to a charity 🙌
In a way, you can treat the Shariah rules as a filter to find companies with better integrity and reputation! This could be a blessing in disguise – good practices in companies in general help the companies to grow further in a healthy and sustainable way 😉.
What about US stocks? Do they cater to shariah compliance?
Just because the company isn’t based in Malaysia doesn’t mean it can’t be Shariah-compliant! Many companies in the US and around the world adhere to these principles, ensuring you can invest globally while staying true to your beliefs.

Word of the Week: Earnings Per Share (EPS)
Definition: Earnings Per Share (EPS) is a financial metric used to calculate a company’s profitability and is a key indicator of its financial performance. It represents the portion of a company’s net earnings that is allocated to each outstanding share of its common stock. EPS is an essential measure for investors as it helps them assess the company’s profitability on a per-share basis.
Example: Suppose Ziet Company reported net earnings of $1,000,000 for the year, and it has 500,000 shares of common stock outstanding.
To calculate the Earnings Per Share (EPS), you would divide the net earnings by the number of outstanding shares:
EPS = Net Earnings / Number of Outstanding SharesEPS = $1,000,000 / 500,000EPS = $2.00 per share
In this example, Company XYZ’s Earnings Per Share (EPS) is $2.00. This means that for every share of common stock, the company generated $2.00 in earnings. Investors use EPS to compare the company’s profitability over time or against its competitors in the same industry. It is an essential metric for making informed investment decisions and understanding a company’s financial health on a per-share basis.
